Me, Myself & I

1.    Please introduce yourself!  Upload a few pictures and write a couple of paragraphs that tell me about you, your household, your interests & any work or activities you are involved in.  What are you passionate about & why—why do you choose to spend your time this way?  (Include at least one picture of yourself as well as “life in action” shots that help me better understand who you are & what your life is like.)
-My name is Abby.  I'm a first time mom and currently on maternity leave.  I live with my husband, daughter and dog in Chicago.  My interests are exploring Chicago, traveling, going for walks and watching movies.  I'm passionate about my friends and family as they are the most important to me.  The pictures below are of my sister and I hiking in Utah, a picture of myself at my dad's birthday party and a picture of my puppy, Riley.

2.     Post an image from Google Images (or any image source) that represents how your body is functioning at this point in your life.  Blog about why you chose this image in particular, what it symbolizes and how you feel about it.  If you could change anything about how your body is functioning, what would you change and why?
-I chose an image that signifies a "well oiled machine" because thankfully, I'm happy with the way that my body is functioning.  I'd prefer to exercise more regularly but it can be difficult to find the time.

3.     Now, please describe your approach to caring for yourself/your health & wellness.  Give it to me straight:  How much/little thought & effort do you put into it, and why?  Describe your priorities, goals, motivations.  What (if anything) is working well about your approach & what (if anything) isn’t working very well?  As appropriate, include specifics about what/how you eat, your activity level, medicines and/or therapies, etc.
-My priorities and goals are to remain healthy.  I put effort into it in terms of trying to avoid chemicals and artificial products when possible.  I'd prefer to eat more naturally but it can be hard to pass up some of my favorite foods.  When I do get sick, I try to use natural remedies such as emergen-c to avoid getting even more sick.

4.     Post an image from Google Images (or any image source) that represents where you are right now on your personal health & wellness journey and how youfeel about it.  Be sure to explain why you chose this image in particular, what it symbolizes.  How does your current stage of life impact your approach to health & wellness?  How has your approach changed since you were younger and why?
-I chose this image because I feel like I'm in a good place in my health and wellness journey.  It symbolizes being comfortable and content in my current state.  My stage of life impacts my approach because I just had a baby so I'm accepting of where I am at this point.  It's shifted since I was younger because I used to eat too much sugar but have found a better balance now.

5.    Finally, thinking about your typical day, what are the top 5 (or so) brands that you choose to interact with?  Write down &/or photograph the brands you surround yourself with during the day.  (For example, where do you stop for coffee or breakfast?  Where do you go grocery shopping?  What brand of cereal do you eat? Etc.)  The most important part is to tell me why you chose to use or interact with each brand.  What does this brand/company understand or “get” about you, your life, your values?
-I go grocery shopping at trader joe's (I appreciate their pricing and natural options) and marianos (they have a great selection and you can drink wine while you shop).  I use lysol wipes all over my house, especially with a new baby (I actually don't like to do so because of the chemicals but think it's the most effective way to get rid of germs).  I use costco brand baby wipes because of their value and size (large wipes that are inexpensive) and there aren't many chemicals in it.  I eat caracara oranges at least once a day because they are delicious and I believe help me fight colds.

  1. Welcome Abby! My name is Kim, and I'll be corresponding with you throughout this assignment. I'll post after each blog, so please check back to see if there's any follow-up.

Nice job on blog #1. Overall, I'd ask for you to give a little more detail - explain your comments a bit more. I do have some questions and have listed them below:
    - You're passionate about friends and family. Why do you like to spend your time with your family (what does that do for you?)
    - You're happy with how your body is functioning! Can you give me an idea of what you like in terms of its functioning?
    - Why would you want to exercise more regularly? What would you gain from that?
    - Do you feel you put a little or a lot of effort into your health and wellness? Can you explain what natural eating means to you? What are your goals / motivation in doing so? Is there anything not working well? And, can you talk a bit about your activity level?
    - Can you tell me a bit about cutting down on sugar - did you take out certain foods? Do you read labels to see if the item contains sugar? Why did you choose to take out sugar?
    - Last question - for each of those 5 brands, what does each get about you?

    Thanks.

  2. Hi Kim! Thank you.

    - I'm passionate about my friends and family because they are my support system and we have fun together. When life gets difficult, they are the ones that are there for me to lean on. When good things happen, I share laughter with them. We create happy memories to share.
    - I'm happy with the way my body is functioning in that I generally feel well and don't get sick very often. I don't have aches and pains to speak of and feel good!
    - I think I'd have more energy if I exercised more regularly. And because it's something that is important to keep my body healthy.
    - I don't put a ton of effort into my health and wellness. Natural eating to me means eating organic when possible and not eating an excess amount of processed foods. My goals in eating this way is to avoid putting unnecessary chemicals into my body. My activity level is often lower than I'd like it to be - I walk a lot because I live in the city, but don't make it to the gym as much as I'd like.
-I read labels to see how much sugar there is and I eat sweets in moderation, as opposed to frequently throughout the day which is what I used to do. Sugar turns to fat and doesn't provide much nutrition, which is why I decided to remove it.
    - for the brands, I included my reasons which I believe is what they "get" about me in parenthesis next to each brand.
